Bowl.. erm.. potholder

Hi, My name is Amber and I am terrible at picking out gifts. Do not get me wrong, I have a million ideas but usually end up settling on the weirdest / stupidest one. Like, the bowl potholder. I mean, yeah it's an awesome idea, right? But it's also sort of weird. My friend's birthday is this weekend and I already have that seashell sand dollar that I won but I needed to get her something else. I thought and thought, changing my mind several times. I finally settled on a sort of potholder that has four "spiked" corners convenient for lifting the bowl. I thought it was sort of a neat idea, but I only got her one. It's from an etsy seller in SC and since I'm in NC, it should be here before her Bday, I think. I hope, anyway. I think I'll end up getting her more, atleast three others to make a full (but most likely mix/matched) set. I've asked you all what's the weirdest gift you've given / been given before, so instead I'll ask you this : What's the weirdest thing you've seen in a store but didn't necessarily buy?

I LOVE those potholders and have given away lots as single gifts. I've also done pairs and sets of four. I've even made an extra large pair for someone. I don't order mine off of Etsy, thought, I make them myself.

I was never taught to sew, and I guess that's a good thing. I am hopeless at crochet and loom knitting, so I doubt I would be any good at sewing. I wonder where the idea for these came from? I imagine they aren't a new concept, just a revamped one.

@ScribbledAdNauseum my mother tried to reach me to sew when I was 12 or so and gave it up as a futile effort. I taught myself when I was 16 or so and have been building my skills ever since. I do still manage to produce some nightmares though.

@SophiaMorros It was never a skill my family thought I needed to know. My mom could quilt some but her passion was crocheting. By the time I wanted to learn, she no longer had the dexterity necessary for teaching me. My aunt, her sister, taught me a little bit. Both of them learned crochet from my grandmother's friend. Sewing was mostly relegated to mending clothes in my family, though my aunt has made a few baby blankets in recent years.

I am going to buy a set for here as well. I am sure they will be used throughout the year since we eat out of bowls alot. Did you make your own? If memory serves, you've quitled before?

Those as you can see on tv are weird gifts in my opinion. There are probably more weird ones but I can’t think of it My niece birthday party is this week and I’m last minute shopping for her. Just bought her a wireless microphone on amazon arriving today.

@infatuatedbby That's understandable. I don't sing around others very much either.

Ah yeah, I think there are even AS Seen On Tv stores around. I saw one not too long ago but I can't remember where I was. Oh, does she sing?

The gifs that are unique are my favorite. I usually listen to what they would like to have and I go with that when it's their birthday or Christmas or just because. I was given a very odd gift once. It was a ceramic cat of different colors with pins sticking out of its face. I graciously thanked her but had no idea what to do with it. I put it on my shelf for a little while.

Was it supposed to be a needle holder then? I usually look around their home (when I am there) and figure out what they need / could use / don't have. I was actually going to get her a new coat rack but her mother in law beat me to it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum it wasn't a holder. The pins were glued in and made to be whiskers. I don't sew and she saw my decor before. I'm not complaining.it was nice she gave me a gift.

I don´t give household gifts to my friends. I prefer to give them what they can use for themselves like a scarf, a perfume, not for the housework.

I like to give a gift that will be used. I've given gifts with fragrances (Candles, perfumes etc) and they were not used. The thing I bought for her will be perfect for when she wants to sit on the couch and eat a bowl of something hot.

I meant to mention yesterday: in my house we don't call them bowl potholders. Instead, we've dubbed them bowl hugs.

I can't recall what the etsy listing called them. I think Bowl hugs is a pretty accurate name for them. I wanted to say "bowl warmers" but that's not exactly what they are. Bowl Snuggies would be another good term for them.

I got a spin thing one year. You put a head of lettuce in it. Add water and spin it to wash the lettuce. I would rather just put the head of lettuce under water and wash it.

I agree, there is nothing wrong with washing it the old fashioned way.

She will love this gift. I have seen some weird things but cannot think of one right now.

I am part of a facebook group all about weird thrift shop / charity shop finds. I've seen a lot of different weird things from that group alone.
