1916 - The first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, opens in Memphis, Tennessee.
1991 - The Soviet Union recognizes the independence of the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
1997 - 2.5 billion people watched Princess Diana's funeral on TV; and over 1 million people lined the streets.
1958 - Jeff Foxworthy was born. He is an American comedian, actor, producer, TV and radio personality, screenwriter and author. He is a member of the Blue Collar Comedy tour which also includes Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall and Ron White. Jeff is famous for the one-liners, "You might be a redneck if..."
2018 - Burt Reynolds passes away. He was born in 1936. He was an American actor, director and producer. His breakthrough role came in Gunsmoke (1962-1965); and he also starred in Hawk and Dan August on TV. Some of his movies: Deliverance, Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit (see below), Semi-Tough, The End, The Cannonball Run, Sharky's Machine and Boogie Nights.
