1846 - Elias Howe is granted a patent for the sewing machine.
2002 - Switzerland, traditionally neutral, becomes a full member of the United Nations.
1945 - Jose Feliciano was born. He is a Puerto Rican musician, singer and composer. His two biggest hits are "Light My Fire" (see below) and "Feliz Navidad".
1953 - Amy Irving was born. She is an American actress of film, stage and TV. Her debut role was in Carrie. Other movies: The Fury, Yentl, Crossing Delancey, Deconstructing Harry, The Rage: Carrie 2, Traffic and Unsane.
