Natural Gas Utility Appointment

A couple of months ago we received an automated phone call advising us to make an appointment with the natural gas company for someone to come out and check the meter. We thought this was a little silly because the meter is on the side of the house in full sight. My husband didn't call; so then we got a card in the mail telling us to schedule an appointment. Finally my husband called and scheduled an appointment for the gas man to come out and check the meter today between 8 AM - Noon. We waited all morning; and no gas man. At 1 PM I called to find out where he was. Well, said the customer service rep, he's already been there and checked the meter. So what was the big deal about making an appointment and making sure that we were home? Sheesh! The utility man could have come at any time on any day and checked the meter just like he comes and takes the meter readings without calling anyone or making sure that someone is home.
