Giant trees once existed on Earth

Giant tree stump

Most people won't believe this but the evidence for the existence of giant trees on our plant is quite irrefutable. The image here shows one such tree giant tree stump. it's known as 'The Devil's Tower' and it can be found in Wyoming in the USA. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,559 m) above sea level - now that's a big tree! It's structure is obvious to the naked eye: it's a fossilised tree stump pure and simple and it isn't the only example of such a giant on the Earth. Can you imagine what our planet looked like back then? These giant trees would have towered thousands of feet about the land and would have offered shelter for giant eagles and such and given them a vantage point from which they could launch attacks on their prey (us!). It's a wonder the human race survived!

Hmmmm, I wonder if Owlwings is correct, but then the skeletons of dinosaurs are humongous so there could have been giant trees or at least giant vegetation for some of them to feed on. The thing is that the only petrified forest I'm aware of is in California, I've never heard of any in Wyoming.

owlwings has a good point @ScotMac so does unclejoe, I doubt a fossilied tree stump like the one in the photo could possibly be for real, ancient man didn't have chainsaws

@rebelann Ancient Man didn't cut it down! It reached the end of its natural life and its remains became fossilised

@rebelann It's an isolated fossilised tree stump which isn't part of a forest which maybe why you haven't heard of it

You're about 6 months out with your April Fool's Day, I think. The picture is of a volcanic neck and has nothing whatsoever to do with trees (except that there are some growing on the scree at the foot of it). This was once a volcano but the softer ash cone around it has weathered away leaving just the solidified magma which was once molten rock but cooled slowly to form columnar basalt. Another good example of columnar basalt can be seen on the island of Staffa in Scotland (and also in County Antrim in Ireland) where it's called The Giant's Causeway. Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh is also a volcanic neck. Sorry, mate!

@owlwings That is the conventional science explanation but us intellectual conspiracy types know what the real truth is!

@ScotMac Ah well! Maybe your recent holiday to a place whose name sounds like 'Crazy Ireland' or 'Lunatic Epoch' explains your penchant for the unconventional explanation!

Very interesting! I have never heard of trees that big. I have heard of the giant Sequoia trees but their height is a lot less. "Giant sequoias can grow to be about 30 feet (9 meters) in diameter and more than 250 feet (76 m) tall."
Giant sequoias and redwood trees grow hundreds of feet tall. They are found primarily in California.

I didn't know that Devil's Tower was a tree stump. It is composed of igneous rock. Man did not exist along with the dinosaurs. We came much later.

@LindaOHio It's a fossilised tree stump! As for dinosaurs and humans living together that depends on who you believe. Read this:

If it is very impressive the size that came to have those trees.

It's not a tree, it's an old volcano.

@owlwings Tree . . volcano . . . spaceship - it all depends on how you look at it!

OK. I'll buy that there were giant trees. But what I want to know is if giants made their home in them. You know. Giants like Paul Bunyan.
