With both parents gone, the recent deaths of two aunts in less than a year, and only one surviving aunt on my mom's side of the family, I can get a little nostalgic. A cousin asked me to go through some photos and scan them for her.
That led me to what you see in the picture. My parents had a Bell & Howell 8mm camera, I think before I was born. It accompanied us on vacations, to family reunions, and all sorts of other places.
Since I don't have a house payment any longer I figured I could blow a house payment or two (or three) on getting those 8 mm films transferred to digital as an early holiday present for my family members. (Given some of the stuff on the videos, it'll probably be really good for Halloween instead of Christmas!
)
I remember a lot of these videos. We had a projector, and we even had a screen, but I mostly remember watching them projected onto the refrigerator. (Quicker than setting up the screen!) I remember my mom crying after watching one of them shortly after my step-grandmother died. And I remember the habitual rewinding of a family friend doing a belly flop into the swimming pool while we were on vacation!
My grand-nephews and grand-niece need to see these, so they can see their great-great-grandparents (that's right, my great-grandfather is on one of them). My cousins' grandchildren need to see these to know their family.
So, this morning, I took the lot of them to a video transfer store to have them digitized.
No, it isn't cheap. But it is necessary....so the future generations will know where they came from.
Ah...memories.

I mentioned to the lady that I had no idea how much was salvageable. She popped open a reel and said, “Oh, no, these are in great shape!” My forte is music, so I can look at a record and tell if it’ll play or destroy the needle if you try. I guess that’s how she is with video. I know as much as those two boxes have been through over the years I’m surprised even the metal box didn’t disintegrate when I picked it up.

I'm feeling a it sentimental these days as well. Lost both my Aunt and Uncle in the last couple of years. Parents long gone. I'm in the mood to listen to Eva Cassidy and other music that makes me sad. ".....to wash me clean..." (Emmylou's Boulder to Birmingham).

Memories are what we live on upon reaching a certain age.
