Oh, who didn't see this one coming? It's early in this countdown of favorite songs with types of birds in the title, but I'm pretty sure everyone knew this would show up sooner or later. With all the songs I had to pick from....it's sooner. Here's today's way too obvious song. #9: Fly Like an Eagle - Steve Miller Band Tweet. Steve Miller had years as a "cult band" leader with blues-influenced psychedelic rock that sounded at home in San Francisco amid all of the other varieties of styles coming from the City by the Bay in the late 60s and early 70s. Then, about 1972, he started to go a little more "mainstream" in his sound. The first album with the new sound (Recall the Beginning....A Journey From Eden) didn't do much (mainly because Miller was in a car wreck after the album came out and couldn't tour to promote it), but the next album, The Joker, pulled him out of "cult" and into stardom. Then came Fly Like an Eagle, and Miller, according to one article I read at the time, was pulling in 3-4 million dollar checks per quarter. It dried up almost as quickly as it came, but he was set for life, giving FM rock some songs to play to death and the world one of the great albums of the 70s. The title song was the third and final single from the album, on the heels of the #1 "Rock'n Me" and top 20 "Take the Money and Run" (with that atrocious rhyme scheme). It's become one of the most iconic songs in Miller's career, and was even used by the US Postal Service in a series of commercials. Yep, it's obvious that this would show up with the other birds. But, on the other hand, how on earth could I leave it off? Fly Like an Eagle Written by Steve Miller Recorded by the Steve Miller Band From Fly Like an Eagle, 1976 Right through the revolution:

Zzzzzzzz. Every time I gig with the rock band (led by the guy who pays sometimes) I have to play bass on The Joker. Man do I hate that song.

“The Joker” made John Roberts’ list of songs that make him puke. Any one of the four songs referenced in it I believe are infinitely superior.
