When you need help with vocabulary you know you can find the answer in a Merriam Webster dictionary. To fit in with the modern world where everyone is no longer he’s and she’s they have made the word “they” into a single pronoun that can be used to identify someone who is non-binary or who cannot be referred to as a male or female. Institutions have already added this option into official forms. What is interesting is that “they” was already used as a singular pronoun in the late 1300s and William Shakespeare used it this way in the early 17th century. In his play “Anthony and Cleopatra” by George Bernard Shaw so you can see how this term is to be used he wrote – “No man goes to battle to be killed… But they do get killed” Just a simple grammar lesson about a new way to use “they”. So when you are sitting in your office at work and someone comes for an interview and you are not sure how to present them to your boss, just knock on the door, look in and say, “They have come”.

It is really hard. We just had a 4-hour leadership training on the correct use of they. As in, there is not more other monikers, address all people by non-specific non-gender based pronouns.

It's good to know that. No doubt there will be more changes along the way.
