CPAP drama

I have sleep apnea and sleep with a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine on my face at night. I thought I would have a hard time adjusting to sleeping with something on my face but it never bothered me. I used it religiously for the first 2 years and greatly benefitted from it. Over the past year, though, I've gotten out of the habit of using it every single night. I don't know why but there it is. The thing is that it transmits sleep data to the medical equipment company that sends me supplies and that I got the machine from. So they can see that I haven't been using it that much lately. That being said I have made an effort to use it a lot more since moving here in April. Anyway the cat knocked it over last week and apparently the water from the humidifier compartment got into the motor and fried it. It turns on now but it doesn't pump any air into the mask. It isn't working even after several days. I thought maybe it would once it dried out but no luck. I called the medical equipment company on Friday and left a message for someone to call me back. (needless to say I left the part about the cat knocking it over to myself) Theycalled back at the house so my ex-husband forwarded the transcript to me. The woman basically said that she didn't know why I was talking about fixing/replacing it when the data shows that I rarely use it. I returned the call today and spoke to someone else. She said that my insurance would pay to replace it if it was over 5 years old. There is a warranty for 2 years. If it is between 2 and 5 years old I would be responsible for the cost of repairing/replacing it. Guess how old mine is? THREE YEARS! I asked the woman how they could refuse to replace a medically-necessary piece of equipment. She said I could try to get another prescription from the doctor stating that the CPAP was "broken beyond repair" and that I benefit from the therapy and *maybe* the insurance will cover a new one. So I need to schedule a doctor's appointment to start dealing with this hassle. I can't afford to buy a new one if they won't replace it. They cost almost $1000 and I don't have that just sitting around. So I hope that the insurance company can be convinced to pay for a new one. Just what I need in my life. . . more drama.

I'm sorry they are giving you trouble about getting another one. Hopefully they will see you need it and cover it.
