Shopping has got so much more complicated!

Do you remember when the only choices you had to make when shopping regarded getting the things you preferred at the best price? And of course making sure you would not run out of essentials on a Saturday evening when all the shops were closed on Sundays? Nowadays you can go to the supermarket pretty much around the clock – but then you need so much more time anyway to consider everything. Where has it come from? Have the producers been paid a fair price? Has the environment been damaged to produce it? Has it been transported a long distance? Does it contain plastic? Hormone-disrupting chemicals? Pesticides? Palm oil? Too much salt or sugar? How much fat? What about animal welfare standards? If it isn’t produced in the UK, has it come from somewhere where the welfare standards are lower? Or where employment laws are not very good? Has it been fished or farmed sustainably? Does it contain genetically-modified organisms? Does its production require large amounts of fertilisers or pesticides? Is it wrapped in too much packaging? I could go on… and on. Even a simple cuppa is a veritable minefield. Do you choose coffee that’s fairly traded, organic, shade grown and Rainforest Alliance certified? What about tea – again fair trade, organic and now we find that we even need to avoid plastic in the tea-bags (who knew? We all thought they were just paper!) What about the milk – organic or not, from local producers or not, ethically-produced, farmers paid a fair price, cows given growth hormone… luckily I don’t take sugar so that’s one thing I don’t need to worry about. The curse of living in an age of instant communication. We know everything about everything. The human psyche hasn't evolved to cope with such information (and subsequent guilt) overload and I consequently believe that too much knowledge plays a huge part in the increases in mental health issues we're witnessing. We simply don't have the capacity to take it all on board without it seriously screwing with our minds. We want to be better people, do the right thing, help others in need etc. but we can't consider everything and we can't help everyone. Find stuff you like that isn't overly harmful to the planet/animals/people, stick with that stuff and stop worrying about whether or not you can do more.

I don't know if it's really bad enough to cause mental health issues, but it certainly adds more stress to everyday situations. At least in this case though we do have options - unike things like the never-ending bad news which we are constantly bombarded with and which we can't do anything about!

@Fleura I just think it's one more area of our lives with the capacity to add to our burden of guilt.

@fleura I’m standing in the toilet roll aisle in Tesco checking my notifications. I hope to get home in time for dinner.

I haven't been around THAT long but I do feel like there are a lot more options now than there were maybe 20 years ago.... Like it is overwhelming, even.

More options, yes, but also more difficult decisions.

I check the labels and when I am happy with a product I continue to buy the same. The shops are still closed here on Sundays, life is a bit "old style" here in small Switzerland.

In many ways I preferred that way - although it was always a bit of a disaster if you ran out of milk or bread!

@Fleura It never happened that I ran out of milk or bread, I have the habit to the stores closed on Sundays, it was the same when we lived in Monte Carlo.

@Fleura The grocery store I used to go to before they closed at the end always changed things around. One had to go searching for them. Now, I am going to a new store and the only time someone was kind and helpful was when I went on Monday and the clerk was nice. The other times I went there the guard was busy on her phone and was rude and the clerks were terrible.

Oh yes that happens too, you have to spend time looking for whatever you want before you can even begin examining the choices for all the ethical questions!

I have not thought too much into my shopping like that I usually just make a list of what the house needs and pick it up at the store

Once you do start looking closely at products you will find it is an ethical minefield!

You're absolutely right as usual, even things we never gave a second thought to are now a moral and ethical minefield!

The trouble is you can get far too bogged down with all that information but certainly I think people are slightly more mindful when they are buying stuff these days. The availability of so much choice is another thing that I get flummoxed with. Too much choice and it just throws me! If shopping isn't bad enough there is too much to think about!

It is all very complicated, and as you say so many choices to make. And after scouring every supermarket within range I haven't yet found any MSC-certified sustainably-fished sardines - which I guess means that there simply are none - which makes you wonder why it's OK to fish them at all!

All true, but I do like the extra choice and the chance to feel virtuous!

Very true, you can pat yourself on the back for the choices you make, not just ticking a chore off the list!

Not to worry myself about all this staff I prefer buying veggies and fruits from market. Becoming vegetarian helps not to bother about animal welfare issues at least.

That's true, it does cut out all the animal welfare issues. Even produce at the market has come from somewhere though, and may have been grown using pesticides, GM seeds, or whatever - and often it has no labels so you don't even know!
