Best friends build tiny town to retire together

United States

A friend of mine shared a link and tagged myself and another of our friends in it. The link was about a community that a group of friends created for themselves to retire in. My friend tagged us and mentioned that the mountains would be an ideal place so that we could enjoy the snow in winter. You might think that we were just throwing around silly ideas, but no, we are mostly serious. We've already decided that one of the tiny homes would have a library in it. The other would be a communal kitchen and we'd have a small herb garden and few other things growing. Probably Tomatoes and Onion. We'd have wood stoves for heating. Something like this is obtainable given the right people and the right savings plan. I know that my best friends and I would be able to enjoy the company of each other and would have very few to no quarrels. Is this something you think you could ever do?

That's a brilliant idea. Apart from the 'doing it with other people' bit.

There are only one or two people I would ever consider doing this with. Too many others would not hold up their end of the bargain or would be horrible neighbors.

@WorDazza None of my family, though I love them, would be permitted.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Indeed. Only a very, very select few would be granted residence in WorDazzaville.

The possibilities are endless with this. Plus if people put their monies together it wouldnt' be as expensive. They could buy their own tiny home or cabin and then have a fund for other things that people would agree upon like a smaller cabin or house with just one room but lots of comfy places to sit.

@ScribbledAdNauseum of course, it has to be with the correct set of people.

@allen0187 Exactly! People who can be trusted and people who you get along with the majority of the time.

The last place I would choose to live when I retired would be where there is snow. I'd want to be somewhere warm. I'm tired of shoveling snow.

Ah, well we dont' get much snow here. I have to be honest, I was surprised she said the mountains. She is more for the beach but I guess she's found some appreciation for the mountains. This would be a retirement thing so we'd just hire someone else to shovel the snow for us.

It would also be economical. Especially if it was agreed upon that everyone spent a certain amount of money on food. We would want our kitchen to be a communal one. A building that is just a kitchen and dining area. We would each have a kitchenette (small kitchen) but the majority of the food would be prepped in the bigger kitchen. I would really like to do this in the future. It would have to be after the age of retirement.

This sounds awesome and light on pocket. It would be really cool to have all the people close to you after you have retired. Time will pass pretty soon.

Yes, I like the money saving thing as well. Being able to share expenses such as groceries and possibly doing some solar powered things with using electricity as only a back up.

@vsai2008 Did you know there are some communities in other countries that cater better to the elderly? We have elderly communities here as well but the one I am referring to caters to those suffering with dementia and alzheimer's. The community has a grocery store, doctor's office, post office etc. All they would need but within the walls of the compound. This way if the person goes missing they can only be as far as the walls of the town and are more easily found.

@ScribbledAdNauseum yes, I completely agree with you on this, such communities for the elderly must be encouraged. There are so many old couples I know who live be themselves and they just don't come out of their homes because the society is not that supportive of them. That community would be helpful.

@ScribbledAdNauseum And it is indeed feasible as long as there's money.

@Nakitakona That and as long as people are in agreement with everything. I do not think money would be a problem if everyone agrees to pull their money together for the communal stuff. Even grocery shopping would be easier if a group of six people were shopping for the kitchen.

Yes, I wouldn't want to do this with just anybody but I could see myself very happily with these ladies and their partners.

No, I do not believe I could live in an isolated place and wood heating where there is snow is not enough, you end up smelling like smoke. I have visited old houses in the mountains where they only had wood heating, a big mess.

She'd suggested the wood stoves as a secondary source of heating. An AC/Heating system would definitely be a requirement. We would not want to live so isolated. We'd require a nice sized piece of land but we'd also want to be no more than 10 miles from a medium sized town. Something big enough to have a hospital if nothing else. My family hails from the mountainous regions of North Carolina and has since atleast the 1700's. I am always prepared for the cooler temps when visiting any mountain range. We went camping on a mountain once (this same friend and I) and I brought two extra blankets with me. She assured me we wouldn't need them but of course It was a good thing I had brought it. She was not expecting the night to be so chilly.

I'm an introvert and a homebody so me agreeing to live with / near these people is saying something. I wouldn't agree for just anybody but I count these people as my best friends.

I wish to build a little home to retire but I may not get friends to come so out of the town.

Your friends wouldn't move if it was away from a town? My friends and I love rural areas. We'd want a town close by but not a big city.

Exactly. Hard work, dedication and a serious plan for it. It would be something we'd have to agree upon and start planning for... like now. Throwing $50 in a pot at the end of the month sort of deal.
