I learned two new things this week!

I just have to tell you because I’m feeling so pleased – this week I managed to learn two new things already!
First I learnt to knit in the round on double-ended needles. I can already knit – only the basic stitches but enough to make sweaters and gloves for myself and the girls – but when I started a new project and then found it was knitted using four needles I was rather daunted. Nevertheless, with the aid of a nice lady on YouTube, I found that it wasn’t so hard after all! Will tell you more about that project when I’ve finished it.
Secondly, our local ‘community café’ decided to hold a ‘knitter natter’ morning, inviting people who could knit or crochet to bring their work along and others who wanted to learn could come and have a go. I always feel I ought to support this café, but can never really think of a reason to go, but this provided the incentive so off I went, armed with my knitting as well as a crochet hook and some yarn in case I found someone who could explain it to me – I’ve been wanting to learn crochet for years but never could get past the first chain somehow.
As it turned out I found a friend there with her knitting, and another friend of hers with her crochet, so after a coffee and a few rows of knitting I asked for help learning to crochet and she was able to show me. Although I’ve tried books before, and videos, even watching YouTube tutorials frame by frame, somehow there’s always a bit that the presenters skip over because presumably it seems obvious, but it leaves you going ‘Wait! How did you just do that?’ so actually having a person there to ask made all the difference. Suddenly it all became clear and now, like magic, I’m able to understand instructions that previously didn’t make sense to me.
As you can see my first attempt isn't the greatest but it's a big step for someone who previously only managed a tangled mess!
And it isn’t too late to teach this dog new tricks!

I have trouble with the tension and I always seemed to work backwards (on the wrong side) and so mine came out wonky.
I've tried crocheting (my mom was lovely with crochet and I have some of the dolls she made dresses for even today) and loom knitting but lost patience. Loom knitting was easier for me though.
Good Knit Kisses is very good at making tutorials, atleast in my own opinion. You can find her on youtube. Have you come across her videos? She teaches finger crocheting and finger knitting as well.

Thanks, I haven't come across her yet, I will look her up. My favourite is Lucy at Attic24 ( it was she who really inspired me to take up the crochet challenge again, but even with her careful tutorials I still didn't quite 'get it' somehow without a real person to offer a bit of guidance.

@Fleura I skimmed her site quickly but no tutorials popped out at me. I liked the lamp posts she dressed up with the crochet.
I used to be a part of a community called ravelry. That was back when I was insistent I would learn how to crochet. If memory serves they had a lot of different patterns and tutorials. I do think that being able to see someone do it and then actually be able to ask them questions is the best way though.
The Good Knit Kisses lady also has a website. which may be of some help or atleast inspiration. She does lots of different needlecrafts and not just crochet.

Thank you : ) Many people have told me it's easier than knitting and I didn't really believe them but now I can see that it is, and making things is such fun. Sorry you're not able to do these things any more, I hope you can find other less fiddly things that are also satisfying to do.

It is so nice to learn new crafts. I wanted to knit too, had tried once following a Youtube tutorial.
