Out of the mouths of babes…

I sometimes get bored with dull clothes. I have some colourful cotton trousers for summer wear, but when the weather gets cooler I seem to be stuck with blue jeans or else trousers that are either black or shades of brownish-khaki. So when I spotted these in a charity shop I snapped them up – even better, they were on the ‘sale £1’ rail! They were rather too flared for today’s fashions, but that was easily fixed by narrowing the legs using my sewing machine. Since then I’ve worn them quite a lot and grown increasingly fond of them. The only bad thing about them is that – like many clothes for women – they have no pockets! It was really starting to drive me mad if I just popped out of the house, having to take a shoulder bag with me simply to carry the front-door key! I was complaining about this at home when Little One said “You could make pockets” ??? “You could make pockets” ?????? Why didn’t I think of that? After all I have the trusty sewing machine, not to mention a trunk full of potentially useful fabric and plenty of thread. Obviously I don’t have any spare fabric to match but I could fit some inside pockets. So I took her advice and made some from some plain white cotton, unpicked the side seams and fitted them in. Of course now when I sit down the trousers don’t fit quite as snugly as before around the hips, but I always wear a long top over them anyway, and the benefit of being able to put things (or even my hands!) in my pockets far outweighs the drawbacks. Why didn’t I do this at the start? Obviously I just need a seven-year-old to tell me what to do! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2019.

That must have been a challenge, but well done you for tackling it, I have never added pockets, I am sure I would have just lived without them.

Little One was right, it wasn't that hard (although I almost put them in inside-out at first!) I'm glad she has the sense to see that if something is wrong, you can actually do something about it!

Smart little one. I added pockets "inside" some pants and jackets, just because I hate to have to take with me a bag just for the keys and some tissues.

@Fleura I have to add some pockets also inside my husband jackets. I am tired to have to bring all his stuff.

We should boycott pocketless garments! The thing is I guess it is easier and cheaper to make and you can get a closer fit, so people buy them and only afterwards curse them for not having pockets but then it's too late!

As you say, out of the mouths of...I thought the punch line was going to be that a 4-three-old told you that they looked a bit silly. Once, when I wore flip-flops to a the previous preschool I worked at, one of my favorite 3-year-olds told me my feet were ugly and dirty. After I slapped her upside the head, we went right back to playing.

Smart 7 year old. I have added pockets and should do a few more. Hubby has put pockets inside a couple of his jackets.

Pockets are such a useful invention! Now I'm on a roll, I think I will add some to more garments!
