I forgot my handkerchief!

Japan

Does anyone today carry a handkerchief for blowing noses and wiping hands dry? We still do in Japan, especially the "older ladies". When I first came nearly forty years ago, you needed your handkerchief to dry your hands. Now they provide paper towels or electric hand dryer, but a lot of people still use their handkerchief. I still use mine to blow my nose. I have quite a collection of them, since they are kind of a traditional gift for teachers. Unfortunately, not one of my hundred and thirty (exaggerating) came with me to school today. So I have a tissue in my pocket and am feeling very non-ecologically correct!

Do you have fall allergies? I do. They are just starting to kick in. (Today is the day after writing this and I have a handkerchief in my pocket today.)

@petatonicsca I don't have allergies. My nose runs more in the cold weather. It's very annoying.

As to blow my nose, I still use the tissue paper. I will use towel when I wipe my hands dry.

@petatonicsca No, I don't carry my towel. If I wash hands in the toilet, usually I will just let it dry naturally

So you carry your towel with you in your purse? Many women do that here too.

i have always carried one because i sweat easily and it's humid here. but i also carry tissues for blowing my nose. why are tissues not ecological?

I think tissues are not ecological because they are made from trees. Tissues made from recycled paper and rags are not so bad, though they use chemicals to bleach and process. The softest tissues (and toilet paper) are made from virgin forests and so I think they are not helping the environment at all. I always get toilet paper that is made from recycled materials.

On many a day, my mother's parting words were 'have you got a hankie?' My nose runs a little continually so a handkerchief is a must for me, as are garments with pockets. I panic a bit without one as I know I'm going to need it sooner or later.

Same here. I hate it when I accidentally buy clothes with no pockets! At work I always have my office (teaching studio) keys in my pocket when I am in my classroom (two different places). So I have to carry both a handkerchief and my keys in my hand.
