Full of Beans - Beans produce energy; therefore a person who is active and energetic must be "full of beans". I have also heard this phrase used to say someone is full of c**p.
Grandfather Clock - There was a popular song in the 1880s that went: "My grandfather's clock was too tall for the shelf so it stood ninety years on the floor."
Happy as a Clam (at High Tide) - Clams are gathered only when the tide it out; so clams would be happy at high tide.
Infantry - It comes from the word "infant" since, in its time, part of the army was made up of the page boys of knights.
Jeep - "G.P." (General Purpose) was painted on the sides of the first quarter-ton reconnaissance cars delivered to the Army. "G.P." said quickly became "jeep".
