1783 - The Montgolfier brothers' hot air balloon makes its first human ascent.
1878 - The Edison Electric Light Company begins operation.
1943 - Penny Marshall was born. She was an American actress, director and producer. In the 1970s she was famous for her role as Laverne De Fazio in Laverne & Shirley (see below) which ran from 1976-1983. She garnered 3 Golden Globe nominations from that show. Marshall made her directorial debut with Jumpin' Jack Flash in 1986, followed by Big in 1988. Big was the first film directed by a woman to gross more than $100 million at the U. S. box offices.
