Anton LaVey(born Howard Stanton Levey in April 1930) was better known as Anton Szandor LaVey, the founder and high priest of the Church of Satan. During his life he was a musician, priest, author and occultist. He was brought up in the San Francisco area though he was born in Chicago. He dropped out of high school and joined the carnival, working as a cage boy and then later playing the caliape.
There are several myths about his life that have never been proven as true fact. He says he worked for the police department as a photographer in the 50's and that at the age of 15 he played second oboe with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra.
In the 60's and 70's he combined influences of such characters as Friedrich Nietzsche, Mencken, Ayn Rand, Jack London and Aleister Crowley and mixed these with excerpts from Might is Right by Ragnar Redbeard and a "Satanized" version of Enochian Keys by John Dee to produce three books entitled: The Satanic Bible, The Compleat Witch and The Satanic Rituals.
The Satanic Church was established by him in 1966 in San Francisco, California. It is the first above ground organization that is dedicated to the acceptance of Man's true nature which is that of a carnal beast. LaVey believed all of his life that Satan was a true entity and believed in the story of his dealing with God in the Bible. He decided early on not to believe in God as his savior however. But, it is interesting to note that on his deathbed he reversed all he had spent his life preaching. He said he had been fooled by Satan all of his life and now he was going to hell.
He died on October,29,1997 of pulmonary edema.
