I only went out to cut the lawn ...

Although I love the Spring and Summer months there's something about Autumn that really draws me. I think it's partly because the foliage on bushes and trees looks so colourful and I also love the damp earthy smell of the ground ... so much more intense during the Autumn I find. It was a lovely sunny afternoon today so after lunch I told Adam I'd go out and cut the lawn as, despite my cutting it a week or so ago and being certain it would be the last cut of the year, it was getting quite long. I cut the front lawn and then thought that my dahlias had now really become a bit bedraggled so I cut them back and then trimmed along the edges of my lawn. Having cut the back lawn I did a bit of dead heading of my dahlias (which at the back are still blooming), my rose and my buddleia bush and put the heads into our Brown Bin, I noticed that the hedge on our driveway was looking a bit tatty so I got out my shears and cut stuck into that. I'd only intended to be out there for about half and hour cutting the lawn and ended up being an hour and a half! But the one thing I do love about being out in the icy air gardening, is coming into a nice warm house afterwards, making a lovely hot cup of tea and settling down in front of the fire However, before I settled down I took a picture of the meadow at the bottom of the garden as the sun's going down. Shows how long I was out there - went out at 2.30, came back in at 4.00! By the way, most of you probably don't know what a Brown Bin is. It's a brown bin that' we pay for yearly but it's owned by our local Council. The idea is that we put all our garden rubbish into it and then, once a fortnight throughout the year, the Council come round and empty the bin into their truck and then it's put on a huge compost heap so that farmers and allotment owners can use it on their land.

The Brown Bin is an excellent idea. It's funny how one task just leads to another, especially when you're gardening.

@olliesmum My Mum loved her garden and would spend all day out there if she could.

@JudyEv I think I must take after my dad. He studied agricultural botany back in the late 1940's so he was obviously interested in plants. He then became a crop inspector but, in his spare time, he was either listening to the cricket or out in his garden/greenhouse.

Adam thinks I'm nuts because I'm out there whenever I get the opportunity - rain, snow, sun, wind or hail.

The Brown Bin is such a good idea, I loved how you described the feeling you get after finishing up with the lawn and going back inside...even I felt cozy

It's an hour later, I've had my cup of tea and I now have one of my cats on my lap. Doesn't want to know me in the summer but come autumn when it's chilly outside he can't get enough of me!!
