The Vinyl MUST Live On

If you’ve been on myLot more than 45 minutes you know two things. One, I love music. Two, JJ loves vinyl. (I do, too.) Over the past couple of years I’ve had the most unpleasant task of cleaning out houses of my relatives. One was when my aunt went into a nursing home, and the second was when my dad died. Doing that once is crushing in the emotional pain. Doing it twice? Let’s not go there. So I started thinking about things. One of the things I thought of was a good friend, who lamented about what would happen to his massive record collection once he died (“my grandkids will just throw all this away,” he mused....and he owned a record store for decades!). Another was not wanting to inflict what I’ve been through in “the final housecleaning” on my niece, brother, or grand-nephews and grand-niece. And yes, I thought about Clarence’s words....what’s a Nirvana fan going to do with a Faron Young album? I also thought about donating them to the Country Music Hall of Fame, but that was a fleeting thought. I did my college internship there, and I know what they do with records they don’t want. So, I contacted JJ. I warned him that it was mostly country, but he said he’d be interested. Today I did my “mission of mercy” — more for the preservation of the vinyl, understand (although I did take Scar some tuna ) — and took the records to JJ’s house. I told him point blank he’d probably put the needle down on one album and go, ”DANG that woman’s got bad taste in music!!” (He laughed [but didn’t deny it ].) But you never know. Heck, I love Faron Young AND the Ramones. And JJ and I are basically cut from the same cloth (music is good; good music is better). So the albums are now in JJ’s loving hands. I told them they are his to do as he pleases. If he listens to some and likes them (I’m guessing he might enjoy Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, and maybe even Bob Wills), then great! If he doesn’t (got a lot of money bet on that happening ), then he’s free to use his connections to see that they get a good home. The important thing is that the vinyl must live on, and not end up in a garbage dump. I know that’ll happen now, thanks to JJ. PS — he really is a grumpy old guy (and he paid me to say that). A sample of the weird things I listen to:

This is what takes up a lot of my thinking time. What to do with stuff we have that none of our rellies want - and how NOT to leave too big a chore for our sons to cope with when we go. Unfortunately we don't live close enough to JJ to bequeath him our vinyl - not that he'd want much of it.

OMG, you used "rellie"! I swear I had not heard that term for relative until seeing an episode of "Blue Heelers" today! I added to the collection of Aussie speak.

Did he pay you a nickle or did he splurge and give you a dime? Glad he took them on.

It’s country music. I should have paid him! But no, these were a gift. And if he gets to sell some of the, and make a dollar or two, hooray!

@FourWalls True, I've never known JJ to listen to Country music. I am sure he'll find the right people for it, if he decides he doesn't like any of it.

I think that is wonderful that he was interested in taking them. Vinyl is precious and must be preserved. It is just wrong for it to be thrown away.

Never heard of him or the song but it is not bad at all. Interesting I sometimes listen to odd bits of music here and there also, My favorites list on YouTube has a mix of rock and roll, country, contemporary, and even my favorite songs in Latvian. When I want to really feel good I look to the Ramones and blast this number
Kind of a rare song now...Heres the lyrics to this really good song. Have I ever told you How good it feels to hold you It isn't easy to explain And though I...

Carl Smith was my dad’s favorite singer. He was also Carlene Carter’s dad and June Carter’s first husband.

It is depressing to think what will become of our possessions especially our collections. I know my things will go directly to the dumpster. I try not to think about it. At least the vinyl finds a caretaker in JJ for the time being. He may not care for the music but is a collector and perhaps can trade them to someone dying for that Faron Young on vinyl.

I told him I’m not suffering from anything other than the fatal disease we all have (living), but having to rummage through two homes in two years can really play tricks on your mind. And you’re right, he will love it or he’ll know someone who will. As long as he doesn’t get on here raving about the Tex Ritter album.....

We think about what we have in the house but mostly worry about our dozen or so photo albums. There's no one in the family that would want them; so they will probably be thrown away.
