As the “travel” part of this four-pronged countdown devoted to things related to road trips winds down, it’s time for another side of it to begin. This one features songs with “highway” in the title. Call the fundamentalist preachers to save me, ‘cause here’s the first song on the list!
#10: Highway to Hell - AC/DC
Only I can listen to the Delmore Brothers and AC/DC. And only I can sneak Don Henley into an AC/DC discussion. When the preachers were having a fit over AC/DC, claiming the name meant “anti-Christ, devil’s child,” Henley scoffed at the idea in an interview, saying, “We’re from L.A. We know what AC/DC means!”
Okay, enough of that. I’m not a big AC/DC fan, but my tastes in them — what there is, that is — is the Bon Scott era.
Watching this live performance linked below, I think I realize why I like Scott so much. For a hard rock/metal band, Scott never stood up there, distorting his face. That rumbling growl of a voice he had just came out so naturally.
AC/DC got much more popular after Bon’s death, but to me they never matched what they did when he was their lead vocalist.
Highway to Hell
Written by Bon Scott, Angus Young, and Malcolm Young
Recorded by AC/DC
From Highway to Hell, 1979
