Do you think Malls are dying?

Philippines
November 13, 2019 7:29am CST
It's rare that I visit malls these days and I noticed only few people pays a visit. Only weekends or holidays I would noticed that they are crowded and filled with people. But most of the time it's the restaurants and fast foods that has more people than the stalls. Malls stores of shoes, clothes, etc.. has little people on it, if they were they just browse. I've also watch videos about abandoned malls in the US. There was a Mall before that has a call center at the top floor. now it's nothing more than a food stall.

I don't think malls are dying and the opposite is true. Malls are being constructed almost everywhere.

@Letranknight2015 that Uniwide building has a story that I heard. A spirit is living there so the owner decided to close it for the exclusive use of the spirit. In return the other businesses of the owner is flourishing.

I know the one closest to me doesn't see much traffic. The large mall near where my son lives is still quite active.

@Letranknight2015 Yes, it is. And now with Thanksgiving next week, the parking lot at the mall will be at capacity.

Malls would take a long time to die in the Philippines because of our close family ties and bonding. With regards to the stalls I think it would be good for them to also have an online shop.

@hereandthere it's more convenient than being the host of family reunions, no dishes to wash, free aircon, the bill is easy to split, unruly kids have enough space and playground to vent their energy instead on my devices and gardenetc..etc...

exactly. it's part of daily life now, just like fast food chains and convenience stores, which weren't around when we were growing up. also malls used to close during holidays like holy week, nov 1 and 2, and christmas and new year. now, people would rather eat out than cook and have reunions at home.

That's what people are doing now a days. I've seen people sell stuff on their fb live. Holidays and weekends is were most people visit and do their business @hereandthere. And yes family reunions @louievill I agree with you there.

@Letranknight2015 That's a good thing, but now as I think on it, it's some of the larger "big Box" retailers that seem to be hurting. Many I used to like have closed... hmmmm…. I think it's all the online shopping

I don't think so. See the problem of traffic in the cities especially this time of the year when malls has extended hours. One contributory factor are these malls where people flock to do their shopping or just to cool themselves. That's just how many people go to the mall. Its in the news.... May be they have this problem in other countries.

@pitsipeahie If they were more than just one bench seats there other than the ones for seniors i would sit on there and hang out all day.

14 Nov 19
Hello @pitsipeahie Most of them probably just to go and eat, or cool and sleep around.
15 Nov 19
@Letranknight2015 Exactly, just as I said some would go 'just to cool themselves'. But that's what malls in the Philippines are. They are not just shopping places. People go there to eat, watch movie, pay bills etc. or do nothing and just kill time. Malls cater to the needs of the people so they never go out of trend. To the extent of offering services such as business centers, bill payments, banking and other services relevant to people. Some includes health clinics even a learning center inside the mall. The possibilities are endless. They know how to make people come to them hehe and that's what makes these malls STAY through time amidst everything even online shopping. Malls are integral part of the society in the Philippines and to see them die in the Philippines? Its a very far cry from reality. But its another thing in other countries. It could exactly be the opposite.

Yes you are right because they sell things more costlier which is my opinion and everyone not like a branded thing as its may not in their budget. There are also online sites which give a discount and on the cheaper rate the same things so it's also one of reason.

Hello @birjudanak There are so many online stuff and other retail stores closer than going to the mall. For example, when i bought a one drop of anti tick / flea that last a month, the price on the malls were 2$ higher than the stalls.

I haven't been to a mall in years. When I was a teenager, my friends and i would hang at the mall for hours at a time (because it was the cool thing to do LOL) i think nowadays people do a lot of online shopping.

@Letranknight2015 yeah same here lol it's crazy how things have changed so much. When I was a teenager the two main hangout spots were movie theater and mall but kids these days will be in a group, all staring at their phones and not even interacting with each other and consider that hanging out. Times have changed
