It seems that even Maria Von Trapp could not get a ticket to "The Sound of Music". The much- loved musical opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater on Broadway on November 16, 1959, with Mary Martin in the lead. Although critics hated it sales sored and it was obvious the public had another opinion of the show. Maria Von Trapp, who inspired the story of her family, didn't get a ticket. When she made inquiries she was told: "there weren't any seats left."
Interesting to note that Julie Andrews nearly didn't accept the part turned down the part. She had just finished filming Mary Poppins and felt that the character was too similar to that of Mary Poppins. Such major actresses as Mia Farrow, Patty Duke, Sharon Tate tried out for the parts of Trapp's children. Even Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss tried out for roles of the children. Sean Connery, Richard Burton, Bing Crosby were considered for the part of the Captain but Christopher Plummer got the role.
The Sound of Music has become one of the most popular musicals in American History.

I loved the movie. And much as I like the actors who did not play the Captain, I think that Christopher Plummer was perfect on the role.

Me too. Watch it again nearly every year. Like I do Wizard of Oz.
