Bronte Parrish is an environmentalist and horticulturalist who wants her dream apartment. The apartment has a large greenhouse with exotic but neglected plants and a patio where she can grow plants for research. There's one catch...she must be married. Georges Faure is a Frenchman who is an aspiring composer. He's been in the United States for five months and has overstayed his tourist visa. If he marries an American, he can stay in this country.
Georges and Bronte are brought together by their mutual friend, Anton. They meet the day of their civil marriage ceremony and don't expect to see each other again until the divorce. This is simply a marriage of convenience. To explain her partner's absence to the doorman and neighbors, since Georges does not live with her, she tells them that he is in Africa conducting musical research.
Bronte is contacted by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) for an interview to determine if their marriage is legitimate. The agent comes to the apartment and seems satisfied with the answers to his questions. However, when he asks to use their bathroom, Georges directs him to the wrong door. The agent is totally suspicious and schedules a full, formal interview in two days. If she fails at the interview, she could face criminal charges; and Georges would be deported. Bronte tracks down Georges and has him move in with her.
If you want to find out what happens next, you will have to watch the movie. This is a nice little romantic comedy with a lot of heart. MacDowell and Depardieu both turn in good performances; and the screenplay is good as well. The screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award, BAFTA and Writers Guild of America Awards for Best Original Screenplay. I recommend this movie.
This movie is rated PG-13.
