I've had something on my mind

I live in front of a dog walking field and when I walk my dog I quite often see people who go there regularly to exercise their dogs. There was one lady around the same age as me I particularly liked and we would chat as we walked around with our dogs. She told me that she never had any health checks even though she was a heavy smoker because she didn't want to spend weeks and months in hospital for treatment. Around 2 weeks ago I saw her from my window walking round the field and we waved. Little did I know that would be the last time as a few days later I heard that she had died. It's been preying on my mind because if I had known this would happen I would have given her one last hug or invited her to my house for a coffee. I just feel so sad that I didn't say goodbye properly.

This is something that often happens... the last hug. There is something we can do, do not torment yourself, you could not know.

@LadyDuck I think she maybe knew she was ill and didn't say anything. Someone said they thought it was lung cancer.

@sprite1950 It is very possible it was lung cancer, if she had a raspy voice it is very possible.

@sprite1950 I am sorry for that woman, may be she had to go to see her doctor, but if she did not want to give up smoking I understand why she renounced.

If we knew exactly when people were going to die we could do things differently. As it is, there are bound to be a few regrets. Sorry about your friend.

She wasn't a close friend but I liked her and felt sad that I hadn't been able to say goodbye properly. Every time I walk my dog I think about her.

@jaboUK Yes I was there and have been on many sites since. I started off on WebAnswers, then moved to Bubblews. After that it was Chatabout and too many to mention since, most of them gone now.

Treasure that last wave to her. Hard to think of anytime as the last time you would see someone. One of my distant family members recently passed away. The last time I saw her, I took a picture of her. We talked for a few minutes. Had to keep it short because I was visiting with my mom that day too. They were both in the same nursing home. I gave her a hug and told her I was trying to get her niece to come up to visit her. She said that would be nice. As I left her room, I sensed that it would be the last time I would see her, and it was.

@ElusiveButterfly It was almost 5 years ago now so although I still think about her the memories are happy now. My sister and I often laugh about some of the things she used to say.

It is but she wasn't young. It was just very unexpected and I keep wondering what happened to her little dog.

That is sad. My mom's neighborhood all knew her as the fast-walking little old lady, because she walked two miles every day at a pretty good clip. When she moved into the assisted living center and I came back to clean out the house, one of the women down the street came running out and asked if I was related to the little old walking lady, and she was worried. She was so happy when I told her she had just moved into assisted living and was alive and well. The lady went to visit her!

That's nice, people touch our lives in such small ways but it becomes quite important.

@sprite1950 I hope I'm someone's "my little old lady" as she called my mom, even though they never knew each other's names. I just think that was sweet.

We cannot predict the future events so don't be sad. It does makes you feel sad but there is nothing that you can do.

@Butterfingers That's true, we all die at some point. I just feel particularly bad about this lady for some reason but I'll get over it.
