I could have looked up Wikipedia, or general Google search. Yet I thought why not put it up here. Many in western world(mainly UK and US) use the term "Bread and Butter". Being a UK colony, we Indians too got used to this term. Now if I think of it simply, one can say that as Bread and Butter is a basic breakfast of many in UK, and also in US(in India too now), this term originated to tell about one's main job. Still, I would like to know if there is some tale or anecdote about its origins. Any takers for this?

I earn my bread and butter through the job I do and when I get paid. We use the term bread and butter to denote payment to us. For example my main bread and butter is that I sell jumpers but shirts do not earn me as much, Bread and butter is part of our staple diet. We can eat bread and butter and funnily enough the other day instead of cooking dinner I had bread butter and Jam. When we were kids we used to make Jam sandwiches and go and spend the whole day on the beach. We would go for the whole day and just come home in the evening for dinner! Mostly for breakfast we would have toast with Jam or Marmalade. It is quick and filling.

As far as I know, bread and butter is not a breakfast of US or UK. I might be wrong. But definitely one food that has got an international presence though I am not sure of the country of origin. Bread and butter generally refers to the basic necessities of life. And we use it for the job that pays for those necessities.

"Bread and butter" means that someone has a job that bring enough money to buy the necessary things. Bread and butter is not the basic breakfast in the UK anyway.

It’s an idiom meaning how one earns his income to make a living. Bread and butter is not a term used for breakfast in the USA, especially these days.
