There's a technique to it, ya know!

Some of you may remember being taught this in school. Others may have learned it for themselves elsewhere. I can say that the technique sounds familiar, as if I had been taught this in school myself, but I couldn't give you a particular example. The diagram above will show you the proper way to open a new hardback book so that it does not damage the spine or loosen the sheets. It would also be a good meditative thing to practice, I can see this being a relaxing endeavor for book lovers. Or maybe I'm just being silly (geeky). Do you recall learning this in school? Do you buy new books? Most of mine are used. Or not hardcover. Image Source: Electric Literature

@TiarasOceanView I do wonder sometimes. This common core math stuff is just weird, so I wonder what else has been convoluted.

It makes me wonder if this is still taught in schools? I think a lot of schools rely on tablets and the such, so it also makes me wonder how many textbooks are used now.

I don't recall this being taught in school and the technique is new to me (and I'm old as dirt )

It seems like it was taught at various times and perhaps not nationwide. I remember learning this, and I would have learned it back in the early 90's.

We had no new book in school. That may be the reason why that was not taught. Now I only read comics, waheehee

We did not get many new books either. I think it wasn't until high school when we were given brand new books.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I was in a public school in grade school so you can imagine the old books that we had.

@Alexandoy I was in a public school my whole school career. I went to two different middle schools because my first school was being changed to a different type of school. We were able to go home with lots of school books from several decades. Even some from the 50's if I recall correctly.

I have never seen or heard of this technique, but it makes perfect sense to me. I buy new hardcover books all the time, but I have never followed this technique. I usually just jump right in and open the book at page 1 and start reading. I guess I need to take better care of my books from now on!

If I get a brand new books, I might open the front and back cover but I don't do it for all pages. I hardly get crisp, new books though. I shop used.

@moffittjc I like being surrounded by books, so that's one reason why I buy them.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I usually don't buy books at all, I mostly will just check one out at the library if I want to read a book.

I never knew opening a book was technique sensitive

I do not think people use this technique very much anymore. I also think that the binding of books is probably reinforced slightly different than what it once was.

@amitkokiladitya Sometime earlier this year or last, I watched a video where people were binding books in the style that was done many many years ago. It was interesting for me to watch. A lot of work, dedication and precision went into the binding of books.

@Tina30219 I know that's your favorite medium. I like it too, and especially Kindle Unlimited which is what I think I am going to re-sign up for for myself. Might reward myself after a particular good month of earning...

I was never taught this. I think most people tend to be quite gentle with brand new books anyway, and they're probably more robust now ... or maybe less robust due to cheaper production techniques.

I think there is probably some sort of happy medium between the two. Better quality than they once were but cheaper materials that wear out faster.

That's interesting, I never knew that technique. Teachers did not teach that. I like reading, I bought lots of book. But now I do reading on the Internet. Less paper-made books mean less trees being chopped down. Save the planet :)

@oIoIoIo Do you have little libraries? They are a worldwide project of little boxes that house books for people to borrow. It's like a "give a book, take a book" type of policy.

I save the planet by buying mostly used books. That way the books do not go to waste. I do use e-books as well though. I am reading an e-book now about a lady illusionist.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I like opening books. It makes me feel like opening a secret door. Good for you that there are used book stores available, there is no any used book store near where I live.
