1768 - The first edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica is published
1868 - The first traffic lights were installed in London. They resembled railway signals and were lit at night with red and green gas lamps.
1830 - Emily Dickinson was born. She was an American poet. Of the nearly 1,800 poems that she wrote, less than 12 were published during her lifetime; and these were edited to adhere to the conventional poetic rules. She lived most of her life in isolation, was considered eccentric and never married. Many of her poems dealt with death and immortality. She died in 1886.
1952 - Susan Dey was born. She began as a model and then she became an actress. She has retired from both endeavors. She is best known for her portrayal of Laurie Partridge on The Partridge Family (1970-1974). She also starred as Grace Van Owen in L. A. Law (1986-1992). She was actively pursuing a career from 1970-2004.
