The last road I travel down this long road of songs about roads, streets, highways, and whatnot is at the halfway point. I know there will be one groan from someone today, but I can’t help that. Music tastes are subjective, and right now I’m subjecting you to another song with some form of pathway to drive on in the title. #6: Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out - Bruce Springsteen And, with songs like “Racing in the Streets,” “Thunder Road,” “Incident on 57th Street,” and “Wreck on the Highway,” it’s pretty amazing that this is The Boss’s first appearance in these lists! That glorious saxophone from Clarence Clemons (the first time I saw Springsteen was the day before Clarence’s birthday, and someone had a sign in the auditorium that said, “Happy birthday Big Man! SAX gets better with age!” ) and that pounding rhythm from the band. Springsteen isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. And, as my late, lamented friend, comedian Tim Wilson, used to say in his comedy shows, “Everybody loves The Boss. It’s New Jersey! But every song he ever wrote is about how much New Jersey sucks!!!!” Point well taken. As I’ve gotten older I’ve discovered a little Springsteen goes a long way with me. But the guy does put on a magnificent show. And this is a classic. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out Written by Bruce Springsteen Recorded by Bruce Springsteen From Born to Run, 1975 Scooter and Big Man:

As I said, nobody needs to apologize for what they do or don’t like. Except Hank Williams.

As a New Jersian I might be dropped in the ocean with a cement block attached to my feet if I was not a Springsteen fan. But I am for the most part. And this song choice, although commercially a dud, is a terrific choice. Clemmons sax solo drives that tune for me.
