Homeless at Christmas

A few days ago I walked past a man begging on the street and it made me wonder how he got to that state and what sort of Christmas he would be having. I threw him a coin and hoped that he wouldn't use it to buy drink or drugs. To be honest I'm always glad when the hype is over and I can get back to normal but at least I know I have a roof over my head, family that want to be with me and plenty of food on the table. I've been through hard times but never homeless and I can't imagine how terrible it must be. To everyone, wherever you are in the world, have a good one and spare a thought for those less fortunate.

It must be awful for the homeless, not only at Christmas, but all year long. We buy them a meal rather than give them money.

That's brilliant. I have given them old duvets before to keep warm

It is sad to notice that Governments waste money, but they can find a way to host those who are homeless, they prefer to keep rooms and apartment empty, that it is a shame.

@LadyDuck That's wonderful. If only other countries would follow suit.

Some of our military who fought for their country have become homeless. I'm not sure how that happens. My partner says it's because they are looked after and organised in the army and when they come out they are not able to fend for themselves.

@sprite1950 No matter how they are, it is a shame that a Government drops those who fought for their country. Veterans are not treated very well in the United States. In Italy it is the opposite, those who follow the military career get their pensions at a very young age.

@sprite1950 I had read an article about the cold wave that killed many homeless people. I think I would also die if I would be homeless and there is snow everywhere.

Yeah it's terrible seeing them out on Christmas. I saw a guy playing trumpet not sure if he was homeless though.

If they play a musical instrument I think they deserve to have money given to them.

Once, in the Montreal subway, I saw a guy playing violin and it was "divine". I don't think that he was homeless.

The kindest thought suggestion I have read - 'to spare a thought for those less fortunate.' My Christmas night would have been ordinary if I have not read your post. You speak from the heart. That makes the difference in this world. Thank you for your kindness, the homeless would sure have a little help tonight because you asked us to think about them

@eileenleyva Thank you. You have made my day with your kind comment. It's so easy to forget those who have nothing when we are tucking into our Christmas meals.

Some are unfortunate, some maybe want to be able to move quickly to evade the police--it's a mixed bag.

I love the way you ended this post, also I'm sure the man was grateful for the help you gave, the genuinely in need usually are. Many people are so dismissive of the homeless and otherwise struggling, it breaks my heart really.

I had a friend who was homeless once. His marriage failed, he lost his job and then had nowhere to live. He bought a campervan with the little money he had and lived in that until he got back on his feet.
