The Month of January

This month was named after Janus who was a Roman deity. Janus was the god of beginnings, doorways, and the rising and setting sun. From this word, we get janitor that originally meant a door attendant or porter and evolved into custodian. Rome has many ceremonial archways and entrances as well as exits that were made for the departure or return of armies. Janus is shown to have two, bearded heads facing in opposite directions. This is to symbolize looking toward the future and the past. In the Roman calendar, January became the first month and with the image of Janus, it was a great symbol of new beginnings. Wiki image

Apparently, both January and February were not months included in the original Roman calendar, and were added later. But, some think that this is only a myth.
