The couple walked into the woods, but only one of them walked back out

Three young boys were rambling along looking for chestnuts when they came across the body of a woman. The body was partially covered by branches and leaves, but there was also visible signs of burnt flesh.
When the police arrived they determined that the woman had been gagged and shot in the head. Inquiries were made around the area about whether shots were heard, but the neighboring houses suggested that the sounds of gunshot were not uncommon, as they lived in close proximity to two stone quarries.
The woman was never identified, though there was atleast one suggestion of who she might have been. The police followed up on that lead to find the supposed victim alive and well.
I will leave the link to where I found out about this in case you'd like to learn more.

It's 115 years old, I am not sure if they have even brought it out of the cold case files.

@amitkokiladitya Maybe, unless someone finds interest in it. Most cases like this only get re-opened if a victim's family keeps pressuring the police to do so. In this case, they don't know who the woman was.

This is an old case so the forensics were not there. However, these newer cases without identification of a body always perplexes me. We live in a society where a photograph can be shared instantaneously all the way across the world, it seems that it would be a simple matter to share such a photograph within the police networks across the world.

@LadyDuck In china, foreigners must register with the police station when they come to visit. They will go to their hotel, and be requested to also go by the police station to register that they are in the area.

@ScribbledAdNauseum If the person found never had a police record there is very little the police can do. Should we all be obliged to have an "electronic ID" with our photo taken at a police office, it would be a lot easier to identify people.

I love them too, they intrigue me, especially the ones during / prior to the beginning of forensics.

I hate these terrible cases. How terrible the family must feel.

This is from 110 years ago, and I do not think that the family ever found out what happened. It seems to me that the victim was from the US and was brought to Canada and killed. If the man knew the woman (perhaps the bf or husband) he may have lied about what happened to her. That's the saddest thing of all, that and the fact he got away with it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That's for sure. Too many guilty people walk away free.

@LindaOHio Too many innocent ones are behind bars as well. We still have a long way to go when it comes to the justice system and forensics, but we've come a long way as well.

I doubt they'll ever solve it unless they get do DNA testing on the remains.

I don't think they will either. I also feel like those who would know / care would be long gone.

Yes, I wonder if she knew she was in danger? It sounds as if the man had planned to kill her.

@samysotelo18 Yes, those who saw the couple didn't seem to think she was in distress.
