A short while back, @JudyEv and I had a quick chat about an underground fire in an old coal mine. We couldn’t remember any of the details and I soon forgot about it. I look on YouTube to watch the NBC Evening News, which they upload daily. From my point of view, I am watching yesterday’s news. Without any previous searches, the clip below appeared on my suggestions list. Quite fascinating, but I’d like to find out how it really got started. It also left me wondering how far it could spread. How long before Pennsylvania is off limits? Even with all the changes and those shortly to arrive, I do enjoy YouTube and should really fertle around a bit more. Yeah, I know that is not what fertle means, but I do like how it sounds!
This Pennsylvania town was once an ordinary slice of Americana, but these days, the ghostly ruins of the so-called 'real Silent Hill' has no zip code, no sto...

I've only read one of his books, can't remember the title. Didn't he use to appear on Radio 4 several years back?

It is quite incredible! No surprise that it is beyond me how to deal with it, so no wonder any experts are 'busy' doing something else!

@misunderstood_zombie It was certainly the easiest option and as long as there isn't an endless supply of fuel it must eventually burn out. Just wonder how much damage it will do

@Ronrybs They did one thing right and that was to evacuate the town, then I guess they had other things to do besides stop the fire.

Where I live there is a similar situation in an old coal mine. A fire is smoldering underground and needs to be watched very carefully or it might burst to the surface. Fortunately, it's not near houses or any other buildings.

Shows how limited my searching was as I didn't know there was a similar situation in the UK. Do they know how it started?

It is a bit worrying and I fear with no way to put it out it will continue to grow until all the fuel is exhausted
