Sixteen Candles was released in 1984 and is a coming-of-age teen comedy written and directed by the great John Hughes. He is responsible for movies such as, the Breakfast Club, National Lampoon's Vacation, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Mr. Mom. CAST Molly Ringwald - Samantha "Sam" Baker Justin Henry - Mike Baker Michael Schoeffling - Jake Ryan Haviland Morris - Caroline Mulford Gedde Watanabe - Long Duk Dong Anthony Michael Hall - Ted the Geek, a.k.a. Farmer Ted Paul Dooley - Jim Baker Carlin Glynn - Brenda Baker Blanche Baker - Ginny Baker Edward Andrews - Howard Baker Billie Bird - Dorothy Baker Carole Cook - Grandma Helen Max Showalter - Grandpa Fred It's Samantha Baker's sixteenth birthday. She gets ready for school and is expecting many "Happy Birthdays" when she comes down the steps...but nothing happens other than the chaos of the morning ritual. You see, it's her sister Ginny's wedding the next day; and they've all forgotten her birthday. Later at school, during one of Sam's classes, she is passed a sex test. She is supposed to write down who she would do it with and pass it along to the next girlfriend. When she passes the note over her back, she drops it on the floor; and unbeknownst to Sam, Jake picks it up. After class Sam talks to her girlfriend and is mortified because her girlfriend hasn't seen the test and doesn't know what she's talking about. Sam now wonders who is in possession of the paper. She admits that she's written Jake Ryan on the test. Her girlfriend is surprised because she feels that he doesn't know that Sam exists; and besides that, he has a beautiful girlfriend. At this point they are in the gym and see Caroline Mulford, Jake's girlfriend, showering. Warning: Depending on which version you see, there is a nude shot of Caroline. Meanwhile in gym class Jake is asking his friend if he knows who Samantha Baker is. He thinks it's kind of cool the way she's always looking at him. We have seen this movie countless times; and each time it has provided us with a lot of laughs. As with all John Hughes' movies, this one does not disappoint. Gedde Watanabe as the Long Duk Dong character is one of the highlights of the movie, as is Anthony Michael Hall as Ted the Geek who is infatuated with Sam. Another especially funny sequence takes place during Ginny's wedding ceremony. If you want a funny, lighthearted movie with a little romance thrown in, I highly recommend Sixteen Candles. This movie is rated PG. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Don't feel bad. I remember going to the movie theater when Psycho came out.
