Hello, I am a tattooed, pierced, 35y old stay at home single mother of 4 amazing kids. I design and sketch Unique Tattoos for those who "don't want the same tattoos as everybody else". Unfortunately for me as soon as I tried to make a business out of it by adding a small sketch fee the requests stopped. What is your opinion on this matter?

I have designed over 35 different tattoos for myself and family members. The one above I started for a good friend and it never got finished. She decided halfway through the sketch she would copy one off the internet

Unfortunately, this is often the case with artists, with people who work from home, etc. People come to you because you'll do something for free. As soon as you start charging, they can't understand why. It does seem odd that people would rather pay silly amounts just because someone is based in another building or works for a larger company but not pay a smaller amount just because you're based at home. I've seen things for sale that I could make myself for so much less than they're selling yet I can't sell any of mine! It's not a good thing. The worst thing is when friends go on about how we should use each other's businesses instead of going to big businesses - and then those friends want you to do something for free or will not even think about asking you for the work.

@Honesmama84 I wish you luck with it. Family and friends can be contrary - all encouraging, telling you that you should sell your work and make a business of it but then they are the least supportive when you actually try to do it!

@pumpkinjam Thank you for your support. That is so true. A lot of the time strangers and more supportive than family. If you would like to take a look at my page I can send you the link.

That's exactly my point. I started out just doing the sketches for family and friends and they told me that I should do it as a business but as soon as I started trying to turn it into a business they turned on me. I actually set up most of last night and created my own web page I think it came out pretty good but I guess we'll see how far I get with it.

that's a beautiful design, and of course you should be charging for your work. as someone who also draws, don't design for free. do you have a blog or Instagram? you might benefit from having a visual platform like that. people could see samples of your art and you could do commissions or something. also welcome to mylot! :)

@Honesmama84 your designs are great but you will need some higher quality photos for the website. the quality is not doing them justice!

Thank you so much. I actually sat up for a couple hours last night and designed a web page and I'm not entirely sure how well I did because I can't afford to buy the domain name so it's just a temporary set up but I did download the watermark app and covered my sample photos with the watermark so they can't be stolen. If you want to take a look the page name is
