Fruitcake

I am not a fan of it, are you? I don't know why, while I can eat those sweetmeats all by themselves, when congealed into a fruitcake, it just tastes nasty to me. However, over the holiday, I was able to enjoy a piece of fruitcake made with chocolate and rum. A friend of mine bought it from a chocolate shop here in my city. It was absolutely delicious! In the Sims, when you move into a neighborhood, the neighbors will come to welcome you, fruitcake in hand. Just like in real life, very few of the sims actually like the fruitcake. In fact, I think it is a trait that you can enable for your sims, the love of fruitcake. It's been so long since I've done it, however, I am not sure if it's still a function you can do within the game. Do you like fruitcake?

I do not like those I buy in the stores, I like the fruitcake I make and YES, I add rum.

Until last year, I had only ever had store bought. The one my friend had bought was "store made" but made from a chocolate factory that makes delicious chocolates.

@LadyDuck Do you now make it every year? Or is it just when you have the ingredients to do so?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Those sold in stores are so heavy, I cannot stand them. I started making one two years ago, because I had dried figs and dates from Christmas that I did not want to waste.

A homemade fruitcake, either light or dark, that has been properly aged is delicious. Its very rich, so a very small piece is suffice. My mother used to make the very best fruitcake in the entire world. Nobody turned it down, in fact, people would stop in for a piece.

I've never had any that was homemade, not until the one I had in December. I might change my mind if I had a regular fruitcake, but homemade.

@Marty1 The batter. The dark is a richer batter, with more brown sugar in it, the lighter with less brown sugar in it. And the dark always tasted heavier to me. She wrapped her cakes in cheesecloth and would 'water' them every week with a little sherry and then wrap them back up again so that it could properly soak into the fruit and cake. It brought out such a delicious flavour.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It is very expensive to make from scratch and also very time consuming. A good fruitcake is done 4-6 weeks before you want to eat it, wrapped in cheesecloth, soaked with sherry, and then wrapped in plastic and tin foil and kept cool. Every week my mother would go out and unwrap her cakes and open a bottle of sherry and pour some more over the cakes, rewrap them up tight and keep them in that cool spot.

I've only liked one fruitcake in my life . . . and that was a homemade one gifted to my dad many years ago. I don't know what it was about it, but remember it was moist and not too gooey sweet - actually quite delicious. Otherwise I absolutely hate any other fruitcake and will gladly make it a trash filler .

People here are saying that if it's not homemade, it's just not worth having. It seems there is a long process for it, a process which is expedited or altogether skipped with the store bought ones.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The store ones are gross . . . it's like disgusting cake with weird dry fruit bits in it . . . and the tastes just do not meld together. It's one big block of yuck . I don't think I've had one with chocolate like you had (was it chips?). I would think a good business would ensure their fruitcake was good . . . especially if they are brave to sell fruitcake at all .

@much2say No, it wasn't chips. There is a business here in NC called "Black Mountain Chocolate", their specialty is chocolates. They make chocolate bars as well as chocolate tarts.

It was one of those foods that I was made to try when I was a little girl. I never liked it, but I'll eat the sweet meats separately.

I am glad you do. Other than the chocolate fruitcake I had, I just don't find fruitcake to be tasty.

@Moon24 Actually, just chocolate cake is something I do not like. I find it to be too rich.

That isn't a brand I have heard of. I am glad you like it. It is one of those things I was made to try at a young age and that I hated even then.

No, I'm not a fan either because I find it too sweet. I can only enjoy it if I have it with lashings of cream to reduce the sweetness.

I've never heard of a fruitcake with a lashing of cream. Maybe we are talking about a slightly different type of cake.

My family has always bought the ones in store. Last year a friend bought one from BMC, which is a chocolate factory here in the city. It was delicious, made with rum.

Carrot Cake is pretty good. I wouldn't call it my favorite, but it's a good treat now and then.
