The film starts out with Emma as a child. Aurora would crawl into the crib to make sure that Emma was breathing. When Aurora's husband, Rudyard, passes away, Aurora and Emma establish a mother/daughter/love/hate relationship.
Immediately upon graduation from high school in the Houston area, Emma marries an immature college professor, Flap Horton, against her mother's wishes and to escape from her grasp. Aurora doesn't even attend the wedding.
A few years down the road and Emma has two children and is pregnant with her third. Flap relocates the family to a college campus in Des Moines, Iowa. Emma calls her mother for money; but her mother refuses. Emma's once passionate marriage is unhappy due to Flap's cheating. Emma has an affair of her own with a married local banker.
Emma is relying more and more on her mother for emotional support as she runs into financial and marital difficulties.
If you want to know what happens next, you will have to watch the movie. This is an excellent movie with an excellent screenplay and excellent actors. I'm sure that you will enjoy it. This one receives 4 out of 5 stars from me.
This movie is rated PG.

My mom didn’t even want to see it because of the ending. I loved it. The novel was written by Larry McMurtry. (His son is an Americana folk/rock singer.)

I just didn't like this one at all. I even tried it a second time. Not my cup of tea.
