It's 1996 and treasure hunter Brock Lovett and his team are searching for a necklace with a rare diamond, the Heart of the Ocean, in the wreck of the RMS Titanic. They are aboard the research vessel Keldysh. They find a safe with a drawing of a woman wearing only the necklace dated April 14, 1912...the day that the Titanic hit the iceberg. Rose Dawson Calvert visits Lovett and claims to be the woman in the drawing. She relates her experiences aboard the ship.
It's 1912 in Southampton, England, and a 17-year-old first-class passenger, Rose DeWitt Bukater, her fiance Cal Hockley and her mother, Ruth board the Titanic. Also boarding is Jack Dawson, a poor sketch artist and his Italian friend, Fabrizio. Rose is angry and distraught because she believes that her mother has arranged her marriage to Cal because of the financial security it will provide. Rose goes to the stern of the ship and climbs over the rail, intent on killing herself. Jack sees her and pulls her back over the rail just as she loses her footing. Shortly after, Cal shows up. Rose explains that she was leaning over the railing to get a better look and lost her footing and that Jack saved her life. She tells Cal that he should receive some sort of recognition; and he offers Jack a small amount of money. Rose thinks her life is worth more than that; so Cal invites Jack to dine with them in first class the following night. Jack and Rose develop a tenuous friendship, though Cal and Ruth are wary of him.
If you want to find out what happens next, you will have to watch the movie. The story is superbly told. There is romance and there is action, and ultimately, disaster...and backed by James Horner's wonderful score. I give this movie my full recommendation.
This movie is rated PG-13.
