1940 - Cartoon characters Tom and Jerry make their debut.
1996 - The IBM supercomputer Deep Blue defeats Gary Kaspanov in chess for the first time.
1950 - Mark Spitz was born. He is a retired competitive swimmer and 9-time Olympic champion. He won 7 gold medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Between 1968-1972 Spitz won 9 Olympic gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze, 5 Pan American gold medals, 31 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) titles and 8 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titles.
1967 - Laura Dern was born. She is an American actress, director and film producer. She gained international recognition for her role in Jurassic Park. Dern won her 1st Academy Award last night for Best Supporting Actress in Marriage Story. Her parents are Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd.
