Instead of going straight down I-75 to Florida I decided to take a detour at Macon and head to Savannah. Now, I didn’t live in Savannah; rather, my parents managed a motel in a podunk town (with apologies to podunk towns) in South Carolina just over the border from Savannah. Savannah is where I took my FCC 3rd class broadcast license test in 1977, so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.
The streets in the “historic” area are lined with trees covered in Spanish moss (which, if I remember from a tour when I was a teenager, is actually related to the pineapple rather than being moss or Spanish). It’s gorgeous. On this mid-winter day there were lots of people strolling the streets, enjoying the warm weather and the mystique of Savannah. (Supposedly it’s one of the most haunted cities for people into the paranormal. Additionally, the city was featured prominently in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which I haven’t read nor seen, so I’ll take their word for it.)
My destination, though, was the Atlantic Ocean. I made it to Tybee Island just before sunset and got my first glimpse of the Atlantic (the first of hopefully many this week). As I turned to walk back toward the car there was a beautiful sunset.
The stay was brief, and I’m in my hotel for the evening near Jacksonville, Florida (another old stomping ground). There’s no telling where the adventures will go tomorrow. I mean, I didn’t intend to go to Savannah!

It must be fun to take trips without a set goal in mind.

It is a blast. It doesn’t always work out but I always have enough alternatives to compensate.
