Route~~Root or Rout!

United States

Some people pronounce this word as root, but I've always pronounce it as rout. I decided to check the correct pronunciation and both are correct. The word means a highway such as Route 66, but it can also mean the specific course of travel, according to Merriam Webster. Do you say root or rout?
