Happy Valentines Day! I started celebrating back on January 1 when I started this list of favorites with “love” in the title. I guess I’ll have to do “hearts” next year, huh? Here’s my favorite country song with “love” in the title. #1: All for the Love of a Girl - Johnny Horton I hope Johnny Horton makes John’s current countdown (people he thinks should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame). I did a similar countdown in 2016, and two of the acts I highlights have made it (Dottie West and Jerry Reed). I did mention Horton as “others,” and now that two of my top ten are in he’d be in the top ten. His career wasn’t short at all. In fact, Horton first recorded this incredible song in 1954 with a more uptempo melody, but the pain was still there. When it was re-released in 1959 on the album that included his mega-hit “The Battle of New Orleans” (where I first heard it) it was slower and more agonizing. Country music in a nutshell: a crying heart blues (to steal a Johnnie & Jack title) about the pain of being in love. This shows that Horton was a good songwriter, too. Thanks for reading. All for the Love of a Girl Written by Johnny Horton Recorded by Johnny Horton Released as a single, 1954, Also from The Spectacular Johnny Horton, 1959 I’m a man who’d give his life:

He didn't make my cut. He had 15 country hits with 3 #1's. Dying at 35 affects the longevity issue. Once again there needs to be that separate veterans committee like baseball to deal with cases like him.
