We were caught on the hop a few days ago when friends of ours phoned us out of the blue and asked if they could stay a couple of days. Apparently, there had been the threat of flooding in the town where they live and they had been forced out of their home when the authorities decided to evacuate the area due to the potential danger from floodwaters. Scotland (and much of the UK) has been suffering from the effects of a winter storm which has dumped lots of rain on ground already saturated from a similar storm a week or so ago. It was a bit of a squeeze for two extra adults and three teenagers but we managed (although there was a 45 minute queue for the shower in the mornings). They went home this morning after the flood alert was lifted and, to the relief of all, their area hadn't been badly affected at all and their home was undamaged. Just as well they had somewhere to go 'cos the alternative was sleeping on a hard and draughty church hall floor with lots of other 'evacuees'!

@ScotMac That was nice of you to take them in even though it was hard. I am sure you are relieved that they could go home again.

Gosh, that's a lot extra to fit in and houses in England aren't always very spacious. I'm sure they appreciated your generosity.

@ScotMac Sorry - I did know that. Anyway, houses throughout the UK and Ireland seem so much smaller than houses in Oz. We are spoilt for room. When we visited the UK some years back, we found that almost no-one wanted to be known as 'English'. Those living in the Lakes district were Lakes people, not really English. Cornish people would point out that is their lakes had joined up they'd be separate entity and so it went.

It sounds like an adventurous week. I imagine that it wasn't always pleasant but it will be an experience to remember.
