Seventeen-year-old Novalee Nation is seven months pregnant and goes on a road trip from Tennessee to California with her ignorant boyfriend Willy Jack Perkins. In Sequoyah, Oklahoma, Novalee wants to use the restroom at Walmart and buy a new pair of shoes. She gets her change from the cashier and is upset that it is $5.55. She believes that the number five is bad luck for her. When she was five her mother left her for a baseball umpire. When she was a waitress a customer cut her from her wrist to her elbow; and it took fifty-five stitches to fix her up. She runs outside; and Willy is gone.
Novalee spends the rest of the afternoon wandering through Walmart and meets Sister Husband who runs the welcome wagon in town. She gives Novalee a welcome basket and a buckeye tree. She also meets Moses Whitecotton who is a photographer and who advises her to give the baby a strong name. He will become her mentor. That evening Novalee doesn't feel well and runs to the restroom. When she comes out the store is locked up and dark. She soon figures out how to live at the Walmart undetected.
If you want to find out what happens next, you will have to watch the movie. I like Natalie Portman; and Ashley Judd was quite good in her part. This was an OK movie. The script was lacking and the plot jumps around to some pretty unbelievable situations. Regardless, I found the movie watchable.
