Stock up on prescriptions?

Another suggestion for preparing for a potential coronavirus pandemic and social distancing is that people stock up on their prescription medication. I don't see how that is even possible unless you pay for your medications out of pocket. Insurance won't allow me to get 2 months of meds when the script is for 30 days at a time. They won't even allow me to refill something these days if it is a day or 2 too early. How is one supposed to stock up on their prescription medicines when the insurance companies definitely won't pay for them before people physically need them? The answer is that you can't. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know because I take a lot of medication each day.

Viruses don’t respond to medications. Only bacteria. Shows you how people are crying wolf and everyone is listening.

I know that but if you are stuck inside for a couple of weeks it is important to have the daily meds that you need like blood pressure meds, anti-depressants, asthma meds, etc.

@NJChicaa — you can get a 90-day supply mail ordered (which I think is the insurance companies’ sneaky way of trying to put brick-and-mortar pharmacies out of business, but that’s for another time....).

I don't know this from personal experience, but from that of family... They've sometimes had to just go without a day or two, so that they could stockpile when they really needed it. I mean, I wouldn't necessarily suggest that myself. Another option is to take half the dose if you can, again not something I'd really suggest. Unfortunately, I am sure a lot of people will have to do that.

exactly. There is no good way to try to get more medication for the future.

@NJChicaa Some doctors have sample doses of some medicines. That might be an option for some, to see if their doctor or the pharmacy has any sample doses. I know that sometimes you can even get a few pills from the pharmacy while they are waiting for the doctor to re-write the prescription.. I'm not sure if they'll do that for all types of medicines though, and at the end of the day, people are still having to pay for their scripts.

@ScribbledAdNauseum yeah but a few extra pills or a sample isn't going to get you through almost a month

This virus is really getting out of hand. It also causes a lot of problems. I hope you can find a way to stock up on your meds.

We always get our prescriptions for 90 days. It's usually cheaper that way too. Your doctor can call in a 90-day prescription for you.

Some things I have a 90 day supply for and others I have to get every month.
