"You've Got Mail" is a romantic comedy which premiered in 1998. The screenplay was written by Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron and was based on the 1937 Hungarian play "Parfumerie" by Miklos Laszlo. The movie was directed by Nora Ephron. It received mildly positive reviews; and with a budget o $65 million the box office receipts were $250.8 million. CAST Tom Hanks - Joe Fox Meg Ryan - Kathleen Kelly Parker Posey - Patricia Eden Jean Stapleton - Birdie Conrad Greg Kinnear - Frank Navasky Steve Zahn - George Pappas Dabney Coleman - Nelson Fox Heather Burns - Christina Plutzker Dave Chappelle - Kevin Jackson Kathleen Kelly is in a relationship with Frank Navasky who is a newspaper columnist for the "New York Observer". She checks out the newspaper for his latest comments -- Frank often roots for the underdog. Once she's sure he's gone for the day she grabs her laptop and logs on to her AOL email account. Joe Fox, an important executive in the family business of the Fox & Sons mega bookstore chains, also wants to keep his liaisons a secret from his publishing executive girlfriend, Patricia Eden. Kathleen and Joe only know each other by their screen names, "Shopgirl"and "NY152". Kathleen runs an independent bookstore, "The Shop Around the Corner", which was once run by her mother. She first met Joe in an over-30s chatroom. They have set their boundaries -- no names, no specifics, just general information such as pets and the beauty that is New York. Kathleen and Joe are shown crossing paths indicating that they frequent the same general vicinity of the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Joe and Kevin, a friend and subordinate, are discussing the opening of their newest store; and they think it's time to put the signs up. The neighborhood doesn't know it yet; but they are about to be lured by the smell of cappuccino and discount prices. Kathleen and her three store assistants Aunt Birdie, George and Christina open up the charming little children's bookstore and prepare for another day. Meanwhile at Fox Books Corporate Headquarters, Joe and his father, Nelson Fox, are discussing the progress of the latest bookstore and possible competition in the area, "The Shop Around the Corner". How will it all end? Is this to be a "predictable" story line; or are we in for a surprise? "You've got mail is a sweet romantic comedy with the chops to keep your interest. Hanks and Ryan do their part to keep the story line moving. I give this one a solid 4 stars out of 5. Definitely one to add to your queue for the evening. This movie is rated PG. I saw this movie and liked it. It's definitely dated, now, but I remember the excitement for the sound of "You've got mail!"

The original movie based on the play was "The Shop Around the Corner" with James Stewart then remade into the Judy Garland musical "In the Good Old Summertime."
