1. Mardi Gras Actually Didn't Start in New Orleans Mobile, Alabama is actually the home of the Mardi Gras. Two brothers, Pierre Le Moyne d'iberville and Jean-Baptiste de Bienville were exploring and happened to camp on the Gulf Coast in the spring of 1699. They realized it was Mardi Gras and so they named the area Point du Mardi Gras. Bienville was the founder of both Mobile and New Orleans. It is said that the celebration was actually founded in 1703 and, to this day Mobile puts on a big affair. Isn't that interesting? 2. It is a legal holiday. Who knew? "The Mardi Gras Act" was signed by Governor Warmoth in 1875. 3. The actual spirit of the Mardi Gras. Bead necklaces are all the rage during Mardi Gras. People line Bourbon Street to try and get themselves some. The colors of the Mardi Gras have always been green, purple and gold. The colors represent faith, power, and faith. 4. Marching bands and floats. The first floats were made by Mistick Drewe of Comus. They started adding them to the celebration in 1857. Other customs are, of course, the collecting of beads being thrown, and masks and costumes. But the King cake is an interesting custom. In each cake, they is a small plastic baby. Whoever has the baby in their piece of cake is supposed to hold the next party.
