Got a call from a doctor ... except I never went to one

I got a phone call today but wasn't able to pick it up because I was in the bathroom. Later, I checked to see who had called me and it was an unknown number, though a local one. The person had left me a voicemail. I decided to listen to it. Thought it was some kinda spam call. Turned out it wasn't.
The message was from some doctor's office giving me my test results... Except, I didn't go to any doctor or get any tests done. Not in recent years. This was clearly meant for someone else. But then how the heck did the call come to me of all people? How the heck did they get my number?

I never pick up calls from unknown numbers unless I am expecting a call from someone but don't know what their number is.

Might be the person in the office just transposed numbers, I would call the office because someone needs those results.

I don't know if they make a mistake when they are pressing the numbers are what. I sometimes get calls from people asking if this is a Dr office, one time when I listened to my messages, there was one from a Dr office that had left the time and date for someones appointment. I don't know what happened in that case because this had been on there for about a week before I checked my messages.

I guess things like this happen though I never had this happen to me before.

@lovebuglena Oh yes, it happens more then you think. I even had a school leave a message saying my child was absent. My kids are grown and are not in school. I did call the school to make sure they knew they dialed the wrong number.

Clearly they dialed the wrong number. But why did it end up being mine?

Obviously they misdialed. You should call the office and let them know they got the wrong number so that they can contact the right person. :-)

But why did the misdial lead to me and not to someone else?

@MALUSE Usually the only calls I get from unknown numbers are spam. This is the first time it happened that it is not spam it seems. It doesn't really bother me. Just wondering why of all the numbers it happened to be mine...

@lovebuglena Because they dialed your number by mistake.

I agree with @MALUSE, it's very easy for the doctor's office to misdial a telephone number. I would call the office and let them know that you are NOT the person that they think they called and that they need to check the records and call that person again. The person that they are supposed to be calling may be anxiously awaiting the results of the tests.
I know how easy it is to misdial a number, you can do it without even realizing it just by having your finger nail hit a number above the one you mean to hit or having your finger slip and hit a different number. Usually with a Spam call they won't leave a message. It will only take a couple of minutes to let the doctor's office know that they contacted the wrong number and it might relieve the actual person's worry.

The patient's number had to have been super close to mine for that to happen though. If the patient is expecting results from the doctor than he/she will call to follow up, no?

@lovebuglena It depends on the patient. I know I usually wait for the doctor's office to call simply because it takes so long for test results to come through. Also very often with tests the office doing the testing will stress that the doctor's office will call the patient with the results and not to call the doctor about the results as sometimes the tests take a bit more time to get the results done and to the doctor.
