Favourite Comfort Foods!

Hey, So what is everyone's favourite go to comfort food? That one dish that just fills you up and tastes so good you could eat again and again and makes a bad day just a little bit better. Also can you really pick just ONE? Because I have quite a few off the bat and for me it depends on the seasons. In winter I love a nice warming veggie shepherds pie or even a veggie version of my mum's Irish stew that she's been making for me and my brother since we were little. (The best part was always the dumplings!) In warmer weather I quite like pasta at the moment I'm loving filled tortellini which to me is just a fancy word for what I consider ravioli and the heavens have blessed me last year with my old favourite spinach and ricotta tortellini but veganised and it doesn't disappoint. I just recently found the same store now does a vegan tomato and mascarpone sauce so you bet I bought two of those fresh sauce tubs because it was my favourite! So anyways what is everyone's favourite comfort food meal or meals?

@marlina Yes, I have a good friend who does not like pasta at all. My mom and her family only liked "fresh" egg pasta (noodles, fettuccine and so on), not the dry southern pasta made with durum wealth.

Nice! Soups are very eh for me I like them but I don't associate them as a comfort food really more a warming quick lunch that is low calories.

@simone10 Nice! My brother cooks but just lately it's been caveman style aka plates full of meat and nothing else. To be fair he's often very busy when he gets home from work usually back off out again within the hour so he's too tired to start cooking a full meal sometimes he does. He does enjoy pasta and mince but usually Fusilli not spaghetti. Or he'll do a quick stir fry noodle dish. Now I've moved back home if I feel up to it I'll be helping cook him food for when he gets home. I used to do that not every night but when I was physically healthier I would often cook everyone's meals. Unfortunately now I have very little energy and the smallest tasks take it out of me. I used to love cooking so much as well. I'd be working all day at a nursery which is tiring enough! haha and then I'd go shopping for food some nights before getting home and cooking dinner and I could spend at least an hour just preparing everything if it was a new recipe I'd been wanting to try that was a bit more than the norm plus I'd be cooking a lot of different meals there's 5 of us in the house and everyone has different foods they want. But I had this great energy to do it because it was something I loved doing. Now I can't work a full time job I can just about take care of myself and do this online stuff because it's done from bed. It's not that I'm literally an invalid like I can get up and do stuff it comes in bouts and flares. Sometimes I'm able to do the chores and cooking other times I can do a few short tasks/chores and then I'm done for the day when it comes to physical activities! And to think I'm only 26!!

Ooh I've never had that but sounds interesting. For me soups are just like sometimes but rarely I'll crave soup they are more like foods I eat when I need a filling but low calorie lunch.

@id_peace Definitely! Soup and a nice bread roll is perfect although now I have to skip the bread rolls! Until I find a nice gluten free version. Although I am some what failing at eating less gluten luckily I only have a gluten sensitivity and whilst some foods instantly set it off like cous cous. Others don't set it off so bad unless I consume too much then I get horrible stomach pains for a day or two and bloating but no where near as bad as the day I had cous cous man that was awful. I haven't quite worked out yet just how much gluten is too much for my body. It's harder than it seems to avoid gluten! But it's just a slow adjustment. It's in so many things though even can be in soups! since stock cubes and such and gravies can contain gluten :(

My go-to favourite comfort food is anything bready and stodgy. But since we are to only give one, nice; paper-thin pizza dripping with various types of cheese.

@Erinnn41 Oh, sorry to hear you're gluten, milk protein and meat intolerant :( It must be very hard for you. I'm glad you did find a nice one, even as plain as it was I think gluten-free food is getting better and better, luckily. I remember the first time I ever tasted gluten-free bread some years ago, it was positively vile

Pizza is good ugh I have a pizza in the fridge right now however it is gluten free and vegan so maybe not to your tastes. I must admit I didn't think I ate too much bready types of food or doughy ones but when I got told I have Gluten Sensitivity and have to avoid eating too much of it or I'd get really sick again. It became clear to me just how much stodgy bready foods I enjoy and it is HARD to avoid! I have a bad milk protein allergy and intolerance to meat as well so I was pleasantly surprised to find a gluten free standard pizza with no fake meats on as most fake meats have gluten in. So yeah to just get a plain cheeze and tomato pizza with no gluten AND it tasted REALLY good was so nice plus I can always add some extra toppings if I want at home. I also agree though has to be thin base/crust. I cannot stand deep pan/thick crust pizzas really.

@Lushlala Yeah haha my body hates me. I am vegan so I mean it's really not hard to avoid animal products it's just the gluten that like it's avoidable it is just sad because the past year or two they've brought out SO many GOOD vegan junk foods and meat replacements but a lot have gluten in. They had gluten in even when meat filled too like chicken kievs and stuff. I can get really good vegan ones now but I have to really restrict how often I have them not sure I should have them at all tbh. It's just like aaaaah I can finally enjoy tiramisu and chicken kievs and everything as a vegan but now I am gluten sensitive and can't eat them often or much at all ugghhhhh I suppose it encourages me to eat healthier. Yes I remember at school when I was like 9 a girl had a gluten allergy maybe coeliac or something and she had a birthday and I just remember the cake and the food being mostly not nice. Gluten free foods early 2000's were not great. I do agree though there is some really good gluten free stuff right now that you wouldn't know is gluten free. Like I had these chocolate melt in the middle puddings I used to buy recently I checked turns out they are also gluten free but I never even knew they tasted SO good.

@Courtlynn It's okay! At least it eventually got sorted and I can actually enjoy food which is nice I went through a bit of indulgence with the new Ben and Jerry's ice cream range especially when they released the non dairy cookie dough one. But now It's like eh I do that with ice cream I can go ages without it then all of a sudden want it all the time as my go to sweet tooth snack. I could probably live without it though.

Yeah sometimes I enjoy a good tub of ice cream. I used to live in the nearest local town right below a Nandos and next to it was Mcdonalds and Oh boy was that too much temptation for me and my fiance! He loves their salty french fries! And the chicken selects but especially the fries! When they brought out dairy free Ben and Jerry's that's when my love of ice cream really came back. I have a really bad dairy allergy that wasn't properly diagnosed for years and I was very underweight and always sick and had occasions where I'd struggle to swallow apparently a warning sign of anaphylaxis that not one but 3 GPs did not pick up on when I said my milky cup of tea would leave me unable to swallow after I'd drunk not even half of it! Ah well...but now I can enjoy Ice cream once again. It's not that there weren't other non dairy ice creams available before they released their range but I've never been a fan of plain chocolate or chocolate anything ice creams, vanilla and strawberry alone have always been a bit too plain for me even just spicing up the vanilla with the odd chocolate chip would've done it! There was one brand but it was kind of expensive although it tasted amazing so much so when my fiance moved in he ate the whole tub not realising it was vegan and I swear I was so mad because it's so expensive I'd only get it rarely as a treat and he scoffed the whole thing in one go!!!

lomi
In cold weather a good comfort food for me would be Lomi... It's a type of Filipino chicken noodle soup. Raw egg is added to the broth making it almost similar in texture to egg drop soup. It's also mixed with vegetables such as cabbage and carrots. Thanks for sharing!

@Erinnn41 This is a staple Filipino noodle dish that's made with thick fresh egg noodles. This is not a vegan type of dish but i'm sure some vegan asian restaurants probably incorporate this type of recipe to their dish. The texture of it is not like Udon but rather like Pho but in a thicker kind of way... This is also popular in asian and especially Filipino restaurants you might want to give it a try when you can. Thanks for your reply.

@Erinnn41 It is tasty! and like i said, a perfect comfort food for a cold weather. I'm sure you can find some recipes off of YouTube on "Lomi" just replace those non-vegan ingredients with the vegan alternatives. Hope you have a great day!

I think I've heard of this before. The name sounds familiar at least! I've never had chicken noodle soup if I am honest I have made before udon noodle broths/noodle bowls. My brother kept asking me to make it for him mostly I think because he liked not having to cook and also he was going through a phase of liking that kind of food I guess. I wonder if this could be made vegan in fact It might even be why I recognise the name possibly from someone who made a vegan version. Although I don't know what you'd use in place of the raw egg. Everything else is easy enough so long as you use non egg noodles and a vegan chicken alternative. I really enjoy foods such as this. I used to love the big noodle bowls they did at Wagamamas but for some reason now they taste spicier to me and my medications cause heartburn as it is so even with the heartburn meds I've been given I still sometimes have to watch the spiciness levels of foods. Which is a shame because certain types of spice I really enjoy like Sriracha! That picture looks very tasty though making me hungry!

I like Ice cream too I wouldn't say it is my favourite sweet treat but it's definitely up there! I don't know I could pick just one but I have a new found love for these gluten and dairy free vegan melt in the middle chocolate puddings. They taste really REALLY good. I've been buying them for a bit now never knew they were gluten free so when I recently got told I had gluten sensitivity and need to cut down on it as that is what was making me ill I was a bit disappointed as a lot of cakes and new vegan desserts coming out are filled with gluten. But I did a little happy shake/dance in the supermarket much to my mum's dismay although she's used to it by now! haha when I saw they were gluten free! It was funny cos when I saw the vegan easter eggs and got excited she said how old are you Erin you're 26 and etc etc. Then this guy comes up to her and he's clearly at least my age if not early 30s and said he totally supports my excitement and told us about how they had a really good dairy free egg last year and it's a shame he couldn't see it on the shelves this year.

@Erinnn41 Haha this is very funny moment! I think because many people are gluten intolerant nowadays there are many choices in the market. I recently tried a gluten free honey cake (it was in a friends home she has gluten sensitivity also) and it was maybe one of the tastiest cakes ever. But it's so expensive, not sure if all gluten free desserts are like that.

I think we can all agree chocolate is a great treat! I actually had a period though where I couldn't stand chocolate at first it was great because hey those midnight chocolate binges were gone and I was getting back down to a healthier weight! But I did miss being able to enjoy all the nice new chocolate desserts coming out that were dairy free. Mac n cheese yes I enjoy mac n cheese but my fiance says I ruin it because I cover it in Ketchup! Sorry but I can't ketchup is so good and even better with real cheese or vegan cheese.

Sounds lovely! I used to love salmon. Actually what I missed off this list is probably SUSHI. God I LOVE sushi of course now I just get veggie sushi but oh man I had some of the best vegan sushi a couple weeks ago sad thing is the nearest sushi place to me is in the big shopping centre about 45 minutes to an hour away and it's a long trip just for some sushi haha and if I do go I'll be tempted to window shop and possibly buy some clothes or what not as it's a big shopping centre full of temptations.

McDonald's burger or Jollibee burger, especially when I get to taste the pickle and mustard. But I really love egg pie only that only one store is selling it here.

@florelway Yeah I don't get it either my partner doesn't like pickles at all. It's like but noooo they taste SO good with burgers. Aah it sounds interesting sort of makes me think of a Scotch Egg which is what we can get here probably not the same at all but it's what the name Egg Pie makes me think of.
