My How Things Have Changed!

Having spent a while going through some old photos I found this one of my christening which had taken place late summer 1960.
My mum was actually quite fashion conscious back in the day and although her smart clothes may not be to today's tastes, I think she looks lovely.
Mum and Dad had waited a while for my arrival. My sister had been born in 1955 and between then and when I was born in 1960, Mum had two miscarriages. But, eventually, I came along ... but the birth was not without problems!
Sadly my mother's foster mum with whom she'd lived since the age of 4 wouldn't go to the christening as she disliked my father ... but then she disliked anybody my mother was friends with. She was extremely jealous and even put a spoke in the wheel when they got married. Mum had bought a dress and tucked it away in her wardrobe. However, Grandma found it and ripped it up a few days before the wedding so, rather than marrying in white, she had to wear a navy blue suit.
Thankfully Dad came from a large and very loving family and they immediately all got together to ensure the day wasn't ruined.
I've still got my christening certificate and, although both my godmothers - Auntie Sheila and Auntie Vera - have now passed away, they kept an eye on me throughout my life

That is a fascinating story. It is amazing what some people will do.
I don't have a photo like yours, as nobody knows whether I was christened or not! My mother always assumed that I had been, prior to my adoption, but there was no proof of this, My parents did not favour infant christening, despite being staunch Methodists, so this did not really bother them.
However, you look to have been a happy enough baby back in 1960!

Strangely, I got on quite well with my Grandma - my mum and dad decided that, for the sake of my grandfather who was a lovely gentle man, both my sister and I should keep in contact.

She does look lovely. Miscarriages are hard. I am glad that she was able to come to term with you and that you were born. Sorry about the problems that happened at your christening. I am sorry what your grandmother did to your Mom's dress. I can see why they kept an eye on you.
