1794 - Eli Whitney is granted a patent for the cotton gin.
1942 - The first patient is successfully treated with penicillin.
1933 - Michael Caine was born. He is an English actor, film producer and author. He has appeared in more than 130 movies. His breakthrough role was in Zulu in 1964. Some of his other movies: Alfie, The Man Who Would Be King, Educating Rita, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Cider House Rules and The Dark Knight Trilogy. Caine is one of two actors nominated for an Academy Award for acting in every decade from the 1960s to the 2000s. Jack Nicholson is the other.
1948 - Billy Crystal was born. He is an American actor, director, comedian, voice artist, producer, singer, TV host and screenwriter. He became well known when he appeared as Jodie Dallas on the TV sitcom Soap and on Saturday Night Live as a host and cast member. Some of his other movies: The Princess Bride, Throw Momma From the Train, When Harry Met Sally, City Slickers and Analyze This. Crystal has hosted the Academy Awards nine times. He's won 6 Primetime Emmys, 1 Tony and a Mark Twain Prize.
